ARE WATER-BASED PAINTS REALLY "GREEN"?

Water based paints have been introduced in the market because they provide an ecological solution to the problem of stringent environmental requirements that restrict the use of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

The introduction of water-based paints on the market, sold as “ecological”, has raised concerns about how harmful they are. These paints contain preservatives that are necessary to avoid the proliferation of moulds and bacteria in the water-based paint. Only by selling the paints in powder form, to be diluted at the point of purchase or immediately before use, can you avoid the use of these preservatives.

Furthermore, there is a widespread misunderstanding about the correct use of water-based paints: many people are convinced by using a 100% ecological product they are not polluting, but they are actually unaware that rinsing the paint brushes in the wash basin and pouring the residues in the sewers can have very dangerous consequences.

In order to limit the waste production and harmful consequences for the environment, this stream of polluted water should be treated.

There are different ways to treat this water. Most common is the addition of coagulants and flocculants. These can be difficult to use as they require precise dosage followed by mixing to obtain good results. Finally, the water and sludge produced requires filtration. Results can be affected by pH and high concentration of paint in the water, both resulting in no separation. An ideal way is to distil the paint emulsion in the same way that thinners and solvents are treated.

HP-R SERIES

HP-R series with internal boiler scraper

The HP-R series uses a heat pump system and has external heating coils and features an internal boiler scraper to avoid the build-up of encrusting solids on the boiler surface. The HP-R series is extremely versatile and is suitable for a wide range of waste liquids particularly those that create encrustations such as paint, ink emulsions and ion exchange residues. The units are fully automatic and are controlled by a programmable microprocessor allowing the user to easily change operating parameters to suit a particular waste stream.

WHAT IF I HAVE SMALLER QUANTITIES?

For users with a smaller daily quantity to be treated, the investment in such a plant cannot be justified. FORMECO has overcome this by developing a series of machines especially designed for treating small quantities. They are based on the standard series of the solvent distillation units but with some modifications.

The FORMECO concentration units allow the recovery and reuse of the polluted water utilised for cleaning and rinsing, in different application fields.

CONCENTRATION UNITS

Through a simple distillation process, it separates the contaminants (normally paint, but also resins, pigments, inks and oils, depending on the application field) from the water, which is recovered in a separate tank for its reuse. At the end of the process the contaminant remains in the bottom of the boiler and it can be easily unloaded by tilting the plant or by the use of “Rec Bags”.

The boiling of the water is accomplished by a peripheral heating jacket filled with diathermic oil, heated by an electrical element. The vapours are then conveyed to a condenser, cooled by air circulation (or, optionally by water in open circuit). The distilled water is collected in a tank ready for reuse. During the process the plant does not produce any emissions.

WHO WE ARE

PROBLEM ANALYSIS

our technical and commercial staff can communicate in different languages, including: Italian, English, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Dutch, French, Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian.

Partner colleagues are talking about the results in the document on hand and together analyze the work data about the company's financial statements.

TECHNICAL TESTS

when necessary, thanks to a pilot plants equipped lab, it is possible to make some distillation tests on a sample of wastewater brought in by the client. Together with the tested samples a technical report will be delivered for an evaluation based on effective data.
